About DAS Works

David Adam Smith // Composer

DAS Works is a non-commercial website.

That’s right, no commercial advertisement, no third party promotions, no spamming, and no requests to fill out surveys. For these reasons and more, we depend on your willingness to purchase audio (either by downloading or streaming) as well as purchasing PDF music scores.  By going it alone we can charge less than the big boys like Spotify and Apple Music. Your purchases are the sole means of defraying the cost of this website.  As you probably know, classical music is not a very profitable business (was it ever meet to be?) nonetheless we hope you’ll support us as best you can.

Our mission is to demonstrate that classical music, sacred music in particular, can have and indeed should have a place in our lives.  That it is a much needed refuge from the noise and chaos around us.  For sacred music is God’s willingness to reach out to us and touch us in ways that we may not be aware of.  By listening to sacred music we come to know God’s presence especially when we are in a quiet place with as few distractions as possible.  This is how we are brought to Heaven’s realm.  And that is all we can ask for in this life, until the next, when the singing of choirs of angels must surely be extraordinary.

All streaming from this website uses ‘FLAC’ lossless encoding.  For downloads, you’ll receive the option of three types of encoded files:  mp3, wav, and flac. Both ‘wav’ and ‘flac’ are lossless, which means there’s no audio data loss from compression.  We offer ‘mp3’, for those who are using legacy audio systems.

Quality listening requires quality audio devices. The world of audiophile components is certainly a challenge to understand, but if you’re upgrading or just getting started, here are a few thoughts.  You probably know that your cellphone’s playback isn’t going to make the grade, nor will your computer’s speakers.  Bluetooth is popular and commonplace, but the results can be less than inspiring.  Your listening device should cause you to want to come back again and again.  Here are a few suggestions we’ve tested:

  • Audio-Technica ATH-M40x or ATH-M50x headphones (closed-back). Occasionally, Amazon sells these refurbished at a discount.
  • Sennheiser Consumer Audio HD 650 (open-back) – a higher end headphone (Note: The FiiO amp, models like the K7, K5, and E17K work well with the HD 650s.)
  • Bose SoundSport, wired ear buds – no Bluetooth.
  • Most home stereo systems such as Denon, Yamaha, or Sony will get you started.
  • Kipsch or Polk speakers have various price points.
  • Of course, car audio systems compete with road noise and all kinds of distractions. However, there are solutions, especially for longer road trips. Consider calling Crutchfield.com for advice:  https://www.crutchfield.com/S-GfOp7n9hKFj/
